Smart EQ Fortwo & Forfour Replacement Battery Information
The first Smart electric drive vehicles were Smart City cars modified by Zytek Electric Vehicles. Powered by a rear-mounted motor driving the rear wheels, they ran on 13.2 KWh of sodium-nickel chloride ZEBRA batteries.
Sodium metal chloride batteries are very safe; a thermal runaway can be activated only by piercing the battery and also, in this unlikely event, no fire or explosion will be generated.
Smart EQ Fortwo & Forfour Battery Charge Time
For the first gen Smart EV, recharge time to 80% takes four hours and 8 hours to 100%.
For the second gen Smart EQ Fortwo and Forfour, the lithium-ion battery pack takes 3 hours to charge from 20 to 80 percent capacity with a standard 230 V outlet. It could also be charged using a common US household 120 V outlet. The Smart EV has a 3.3 kW on-board charger for AC charging.
The third generation Smart EQ Fortwo and Forfour features a “quick-charge” option.
Smart EQ Fortwo and Forfour Battery Replacement Cost
Smart EQ Fortwo and Forfour replacement batteries can cost anywhere from £2,000 – 5,000. Installation is fairly straight forward, so mechanic’s labor costs can range from £250-500.
