About the Honda Insight Hybrid

The Insight is a hybrid electric vehicle manufactured and marketed by Honda. It exists in its first generation as a two-door, two passenger liftback (1999–2006) and in its second generation as a four-door, five passenger liftback (2009–2014). In its third generation, it became a four-door sedan (2019–present). It was Honda’s first model with Integrated Motor Assist system and the most fuel efficient gasoline-powered car available in the U.S. without plug-in capability.

To change the key fob battery

1. Remove the valet key from the key fob
2. Separate the key fob halves by inserting the key partially back into the slot and twisting and prying
3. With the two halves apart, remove the old battery by pulling back on the tabs holding it in place.
4. Reinstall the new battery in the same orientation
5. Recombine the two halves and re-insert the valet key to complete the job.

2010-2014 Honda Insight Key Fob Battery Replacement Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Using a precision screwdriver, remove the battery on the back of the key
2. Using a flat-head screw driver or pry tool, gently wedge it between the two key halves and pry them apart.
3. Pull the back half of the key outward and downward and the two halves should separate.
4. With the two halves apart, the battery compartment should pop out of the key.
5. Pry the two halves of the battery compartment apart, remove the old battery by pulling back on the tabs holding it in place.
6. Remove and reinstall the new battery in the same orientation
7. Recombine the two halves and install in the reverse of removal.

What to expect when purchasing a replacement battery for your Honda Insight

The process for purchasing a battery for your Honda Insight can include a few surprises:

• Core Charges – A “core charge” is where a vendor charges you a fee as collateral until you send them the part that you are replacing, in this case the battery pack. It is not unusual to see a core charge be the same price as your used battery, typically around $1000-3000.
  
• Shipping Charges – Batteries are heavy! You can’t exactly toss one in the mailbox. Some vendors will include the cost of batteries in your purchase. Others may charge you anywhere from $100 to $300 to ship. You may also be assessed an additional charge to deliver to a residential address.
  
• Packaging – If you need to ship your battery to a vendor, you may want to consider the cost of packaging. Typically if you are returning a core, you can simply put your old battery in the same packaging that your replacement battery came in, and ship it back. Be extra careful when packing your battery as most vendors require a core battery to be able to be refurbished, and you may not receive back your core charge if the battery is damaged in transit.

How to Remove the Battery in your 2000-2006 Honda Insight

Please consult your owners manual and factory service manual prior to removing or servicing Honda Insight batteries. This work is for qualified technicians only. The following is for informational purposes only.

The tools you’ll need:

• Socket Wrench and Sockets
  • 10mm deep socket
  • 12mm deep socket
  • 14mm deep socket
  • T30 Torx Bit
• 8mm box end wrench
• Trim removal tool
• Impact Driver with 6″ extension
• Cat 3 1000V rated volt meter
• High voltage gloves (Class 0 – 1000V rated)

Step-by-Step Instructions

• To begin, turn the ignition switch off and move both front seats to their forward most position.
• After opening the hatch, remove all carpeting / trays that cover the battery housing.
• Remove the 2 bolts securing the breaker cover using your 10mm socket.
• Remove the breaker cover and switch the breaker to the OFF position. Make sure to replace the safety clip (red) when finished.
• Remove one bolt next to the breaker switch using your 8mm box-end wrench.
• Remove the trim clips from the side cover / battery cover.
• Remove all bolts from the top of the battery cover, side panels, and cross bar located behind the seatbacks.
• Put on your safety gloves
• Remove the cover (aluminum) to expose the high voltage battery and internals.
• Check for proper voltage across two large orange cables connected to the battery.
• If the voltage is below 30V, it is safe to remove your gloves and disconnect all electronics from the battery.
• Remove the styrofoam insulation on top of the battery.
• Remove the ground wire and braces from the battery.
• Remove the plastic clips that secure the ground and main power cables
• Remove the bolts that secure the main power cables.
• Unplug the wiring harness from the ECM module, the MCM module, and from the battery.
• Remove the two modules & brackets from the top of the battery and lay aside behind the seat area.
• Remove the bolt securing the air duct and then remove the air duct.
• Remove the 4 bolts securing the battery to the vehicle floor using a 12mm socket and extension.
• Grasping the tabs on top of the battery, lift the rear of the battery up and rearward until the mounting legs are resting on the ledge of the battery carrier housing.
• Remove the bolts securing the cooling fan to the battery pack.
• Lift and remove the battery from the vehicle.
• Reverse this process to re-install, ensuring you switch the breaker to the on position before attempting to start the vehicle.
