How to replace the electric batteries in your E-Z-GO Medalist?

Step 1: Consult your Repair Manual

Please consult your E-Z-GO Medalist repair guide before beginning any repairs or modifications. We strongly recommend you purchase either a reference manual or a factory service manual before starting any project. ManualsLib.com provides an online version of the E-Z-Go Medalist Owner’s Manual and Service Guide.

The guide below is general instructions for removing batteries. Your experience may be different depending on the year, make and model of your vehicle.

Exercise extreme caution when handling batteries and only follow these instructions if you are a licensed technician and have adequate mechanical aptitude.

Before you begin any work on any electric cart, please ensure the cart is in “tow mode” or whatever the manufacturer recommends for proper safety guidelines. Failure to follow manufacturer guidelines may put you in unnecessary danger or peril.

Step 2: Find the tools you’ll need..

We’ve included a list of tools that we think you will find useful. You may have some of these already, but if you don’t, click on the links to see our preferred products for your battery needs:

Step 3: Get the parts you’ll want..

Check out the E-Z-Go Store on Amazon to find all of these parts in a single location.

Step 4: Inspect the Batteries:

Gain access to the battery compartment by lifting the seat.

  1. Remove any corrosion from terminals with your battery terminal cleaning tool.
  2. Ensure the battery water level is full by unseating the cap on top of the battery.
  3. Use a battery tester or volt meter to ensure the batteries are properly charged.

Step 5: Remove the Batteries

Helpful Hint: Before doing any work, it is helpful to take a picture of your battery and the layout of the terminals for reference later, especially if you have charging equipment wired with the batteries.

  1. If cart is equipped, put the cart in “Tow Mode”
  2. Disconnect all battery terminals by loosening the nuts holding the terminal to the battery
  3. Remove the battery hold-down bracket toward the center of the batteries
  4. Lift the batteries out from the vehicle
  5. Clean any corrosion from around the battery tray with a scraper or wire brush.
  6. Replace battery hold-down rods, if corrosion is seen.

Step 6: Re-Install the Batteries

  1. Place the new or replacement batteries back within the battery tray, with the positive terminals facing outward.
  2. Tilt the outer-rear batteries away from the tray, and carefully hook the hold-down rods within their respective slots.
  3. Fasten the battery hold down over the batteries and replace the nuts securing the batteries in place.
  4. Using new or clean wires, install any auxiliary lights or electrical accessories as they were prior to removal.
  5. Lay the wires in place to connect the batteries in series
  6. Tighten the nuts securing all wires.
  7. Spray terminals with terminal protector to prevent corrosion.

Which charger is right for my E-Z-GO Medalist?

Modern chargers are vastly superior to the older models in many ways, yet are not fool proof. High-frequency charging has reduced the size, speed, and cost of battery chargers and is likely a great solution for newer model carts.

For the E-Z-GO Workhose, we suggest you please consult your E-Z-GO Medalist repair guide before shopping for a charger.

Lester Summit II 36v / 48v Battery Charger

You have a ton of options for battery chargers, but we recommend the Lester Summit II for the latest in charging technology.

  • Multi-voltage support – Automatic DC output voltage detection and adjustment
  • 48V, 36V and 24V battery packs can be charged with a single charger
  • Bluetooth App for monitoring charge cycle status
  • Wet/flooded, AGM, gel, and lithium-ion compatible
  • Measures: 10.969L x 9.250W x 4.000H

Find the Lester Summit II on Amazon and make sure you get the right plug for your vehicle to make installation a snap. An E-Z-Go Medalist typically uses a “Powerwise” connector to connect to a charger.

Lester Electrical can be reached at the following for sales inquiries or service:

Some modern chargers will read fully charged, yet your E-Z-GO may NOT be fully charged. We suggest using a hydrometer for testing your batteries to ensure that they have a full charge.

Charging your batteries can take anywhere from 4-8 hours, depending on the charger. Once charged, your batteries will be HOT. We suggest letting your batteries cool for 2-3 hours before use. Failure to do so may cause premature wear on the plates in the batteries.

Always charge your batteries in a well ventilated area.

How do I tell if I have a 36v or 48v E-Z-Go Medalist?

  1. Lift up the seat to view the battery compartment.
  2. Count the number of holes on each battery. You may need to remove the battery cap to see the holes.
  3. Multiply the number of holes on a single battery by 2 to determine that battery’s voltage.
    1. Three holes = 6V battery
    2. Four holes = 8V battery
  4. Multiply the golf cart battery voltage by the total number of batteries.
    1. A 36V EZGO cart will have 6 batteries with 3 holes on each battery as each hole represents a 2 volt cell

How do I know my cart is an E-Z-GO Medalist?

The E-Z-GO Medalist was only manufactured for two years, 1994 and 1995. Your cart’s serial number can quickly tell you the year, and thus the model of your E-Z-GO. If you think you have a Medalist, first look for your serial number inside of your glove box, toward the passenger side:

  • Serial numbers ending in “93” = 1993 E-Z-GO Marathon
  • Serial numbers ending in “94” = 1994 E-Z-GO Medalist
  • Serial numbers ending in “95” = 1995 E-Z-GO Medalist
  • Serial numbers ending in “96” = 1996 E-Z-GO TXT
  • Serial numbers ending in “97” = 1997 E-Z-GO TXT
  • Serial numbers ending in “98” = 1998 E-Z-GO TXT

You can also figure out which Model E-Z-GO you own by the location of the serial number itself:

Be aware of surroundings when charging lead-acid batteries

Hydrogen gas is generated as a byproduct of the lead-acid battery charging process. An air concentration of only 4% hydrogen gas is explosive and could cause severe injury or death. Only charge your vehicles in an area that is adequately ventilated.

Never smoke around or charge batteries in an area that has open flame or electrical equipment that could cause an electrical arc. The consequences could be harmful or fatal if proper precautions aren’t taken.

How to safely recycle E-Z-GO Medalist Batteries

Batteries contain rare materials that can be reclaimed and sold, so many different organizations will gladly take them from you. There should be no need to ever throw an automotive battery in the garbage.

  • You can often sell your old batteries back to automotive part stores when buying new as a “core charge”. Make sure to always take your old batteries with you when buying new.

  • Your local municipality will also have options for disposing of your batteries. Check your local government websites for these options and if the information is not available, reach out via email. Chances are you will get pointed in the right direction.

  • Your local waste management facility will also be able to provide disposal services.

Safe and responsible battery disposal is the smart thing to do and ensures more materials are being reused more often.
