The lithium-ion high-voltage battery in the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 is the first high-voltage battery which has been developed and produced directly at the BMW Group in-house.
Every twelve cells are arranged in a compact module and welded by laser. A CSC (Cell Supervision Circuit) monitors the individual cell voltages and temperature for each module.
Cooling this battery is necessary as high temperatures may lead to accelerated ageing of the lithium-ion cells. To facilitate a long service life, a direct refrigerant cooling has been integrated in the high-voltage battery of the BMW ActiveHybrid 5.

Jump starting a BMW ActiveHybrid 5
Since the battery is located in the trunk, there are convenient terminals located under the hood of the vehicle to connect the positive and negative battery cables, marked with a positive and a negative. Hook the positive up to the vehicle with the dead battery first, then to the vehicle you are jumping from.
Something to keep in mind: Traditional jumper cables are typically designed to handle the high amperage load of a starter motor. However, in the case of a hybrid vehicle, we are only attempting to power the 12-volt bus and therefore do not require such heavy-duty cables. It is recommended to use cables with a gauge size no larger than 14 – small motorcycle battery clamps should be sufficient.
