- Ensure the battery water level is full by unseating the cap on top of the battery.
- If the water level is low, use a battery water filler tool to properly fill the battery.
- Use a battery tester or volt meter to ensure the batteries are properly charged.
Step 5: Remove the Batteries
Helpful Hint: Before doing any work, it is helpful to take a picture of your battery and the layout of the terminals for reference later, especially if you have charging equipment wired with the batteries.
- If cart is equipped, put the cart in “Tow Mode”
- Disconnect all battery terminals by loosening the nuts holding the terminal to the battery
- Remove the battery hold-down bracket toward the center of the batteries
- Lift the batteries out from the vehicle
- Clean any corrosion from around the battery tray with a scraper or wire brush.
- Replace battery hold-down rods, if corrosion is seen.
Step 6: Re-Install the Batteries
- Place the new or replacement batteries back within the battery tray, with the positive terminals facing outward.
- Tilt the outer-rear batteries away from the tray, and carefully hook the hold-down rods within their respective slots.
- Fasten the battery hold down over the batteries and replace the nuts securing the batteries in place.
- Using new or clean wires, install any auxiliary lights or electrical accessories as they were prior to removal.
- Lay the wires in place to connect the batteries in series
- Tighten the nuts securing all wires.
- Spray terminals with terminal protector to prevent corrosion.

Which charger is right for my E-Z-GO TXT?
Modern chargers are vastly superior to the older models in many ways, yet are not fool proof. High-frequency charging has reduced the size, speed, and cost of battery chargers and is likely a great solution for newer model carts.
For the E-Z-GO TXT, we suggest you please consult your E-Z-GO manual before shopping for a charger.

Some notes about charging your EZ-GO TXT
Some modern chargers will read fully charged, yet your E-Z-GO may NOT be fully charged. We suggest using a hydrometer for testing your batteries to ensure that they have a full charge.
Charging your batteries can take anywhere from 4-8 hours, depending on the charger. Once charged, your batteries will be HOT. We suggest letting your batteries cool for 2-3 hours before use. Failure to do so may cause premature wear on the plates in the batteries.
Always charge your batteries in a well ventilated area.
How do I tell if I have a 36v or 48v E-Z-Go TXT?
- Lift up the seat to view the battery compartment.
- Count the number of holes on each battery. You may need to remove the battery cap to see the holes.
- Multiply the number of holes on a single battery by 2 to determine that battery’s voltage.
- Three holes = 6V battery
- Four holes = 8V battery
- Multiply the golf cart battery voltage by the total number of batteries.
- A 36V E-Z-GO cart will have 6 batteries with 3 holes on each battery as each hole represents a 2 volt cell
How do I know my cart is an EZ-GO TXT?
Your carts serial number can quickly tell you the year, and thus the model of your EZ-GO:
- Serial numbers ending in “92” = 1992 EZ-GO Marathon
- Serial numbers ending in “93” = 1993 EZ-GO Marathon
- Serial numbers ending in “94” = 1994 EZ-GO Medalist
- Serial numbers ending in “95” = 1995 EZ-GO Medalist
- Serial numbers ending in “96” = 1996 EZ-GO TXT
- Serial numbers ending in “97” = 1997 EZ-GO TXT
- Serial numbers ending in “98” = 1998 EZ-GO TXT
You can also figure out which Model EZ-GO you own by the location of the serial number itself.
Location | Model | Years |
Frame, under the driver’s seat | Pre-Marathon | 1965-1975 |
Glove box, under passenger side | Marathon | 1976-1993 |
Glove box, inside passenger side | Medalist | 1994-1995 |
Glove box, inside passenger side | TXT | 1996+ |

How to safely recycle E-Z-GO TXT Batteries
Batteries contain rare materials that can be reclaimed and sold, so many different organizations will gladly take them from you. There should be no need to ever throw an automotive battery in the garbage.
- You can often sell your old batteries back to automotive part stores when buying new as a “core charge”. Make sure to always take your old batteries with you when buying new.
- Your local municipality will also have options for disposing of your batteries. Check your local government websites for these options and if the information is not available, reach out via email. Chances are you will get pointed in the right direction.
- Your local waste management facility will also be able to provide disposal services.
Safe and responsible battery disposal is the smart thing to do and ensures more materials are being reused more often.
