About the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid
History of the Sonata Hybrid
Hyundai Sonata Hybrid sales began with the sixth generation Sonata in the US in February 2011. Since then, the Sonata has been a mainstay of the US hybrid sales market, capturing 4.7% of overall US hybrid sales by 2014. Although the seventh generation Sonata debuted in 2015, the 2014 Sonata Hybrid was sold into 2015 as a carryover model.
Hyundai released a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant in 2015, the Sonata PHEV, which was released in select markets in the US; California and nine other states that share the same zero-emissions vehicle requirements.

Sonata Hybrid Remote Key Fob Battery
The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid’s key fob uses a CR2032 battery.
These batteries can sometimes be found in your grocery store, and can always be found online:

To access, you’ll want to first separate the key fob halves by inserting a slotted screw driver with a large head into the slot in the recess at the end of the key fob and twisting. The two halves should pry apart, where you will remove the old battery from the back half using a precision screwdriver to pop the battery out of it’s retainer. Then reinstall the new battery in the same orientation and recombine the two halves to complete the job.
Sonata Hybrid Drivetrain Specifications
The 2011 through early 2014 Sonata Hybrid drivetrain combines a 2.4-liter engine with six-speed automatic transmission, and a 30 kW electric motor and lightweight lithium polymer batteries to produce a full gasoline-electric hybrid. This powertrain is shared with the 2011 Kia Optima Hybrid
The Sonata sold from late 2014 through 2019 features a 2.0L I4 direct injection gasoline engine with a standard hybrid drivetrain, or plug-in hybrid drivetrain, depending on the market. This is all mated to a 6-speed automatic.
For models 2019 through the present, the Hyundai Sonata is also featured in standard hybrid and PHEV variants mated to a 6-speed automatic.
