Ford Escape Hybrid History

The Ford Escape Hybrid made history when it became the first SUV to contain a hybrid gasoline/electric drivetrain in 2005. Production ended in 2012. 

A shared platform comprised the second generations under the models Ford Escape, Mercury Mariner, and Mazda Tribute, which were released in 2008. Only the Escape and Mariner came in hybrid versions.

An updated exterior was introduced in 2009, as well as a bump in displacement for the gasoline engine. The formula of a true hybrid remains unchanged through the years, however, with power being available from the engine alone, the electric motors alone, or some combination of the two depending on the conditions.

Battery Replacement Instructions

To change the key fob battery

1. Remove the valet key from the key fob
2. Separate the key fob halves by inserting the key partially back into the slot, then twisting and prying
3. With the two halves apart, remove the old battery by pulling back on the two tabs holding it in place.
4. Reinstall the new battery in the same orientation
5. Recombine the two halves and re-insert the valet key to complete the job.

What to expect when purchasing a replacement battery for your hybrid

The process for purchasing a battery for your Ford Escape Hybrid can include a few surprises:

• Core Charges – A “core charge” is where a vendor charges you a fee as collateral until you send them the part that you are replacing, in this case the battery pack. It is not unusual to see a core charge be the same price as your used battery, typically around $1000-3000.
  
• Shipping Charges – Batteries are heavy! You can’t exactly toss one in the mailbox. Some vendors will include the cost of batteries in your purchase. Others may charge you anywhere from $100 to $300 to ship. You may also be assessed an additional charge to deliver to a residential address.
