2021 Tesla Battery Changes
Starting in 2021, there were two notable changes with the OEM battery packs found in the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y.
- The battery chemistry changed from Nickel Cobalt Aluminum (NCA) to Lithium-Iron Phosphate (LiFP).
- Battery cells were now prismatic.
Cobalt is expensive to mine and iron is ubiquitous. Switching to LiFP prismatic cells saves space when compared to their cylindrical NCA counterparts.
This new chemistry does come with a small penalty, with an EPA range rating of approximately 10 fewer miles (253 vs 263).

What is the Tesla Model 3’s IPM-SynRM technology?
Also known as PMa-SynRM (Permanent Magnet assisted Syncrhonous Reluctance Motor), the IPM-SynRM electric motor found in later Model 3s pushed the bar forward from the standard induction (asynchronous) electric motors that Nikola Tesla himself pioneered.
These new motors achieve higher efficiencies at both higher and lower speeds by eliminating currents in the rotor bars that created heat and inefficiencies. The IPM-SynRM permanent magnet motors create greater take-off torque and reduce current in the rotor bars (aka: heat) at highway speeds.
